Zebra Technologies to Provide 3M with New Secure ID Card Printers for High Security Identification Programs |

CAMARILLO, Calif., February 11, 2002 — Zebra Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq: ZBRA), a worldwide leader in bar code labeling solutions and card printers, today announced that it has entered into an OEM agreement with 3M's Safety & Security Systems Division to supply the company's new model S820i secure ID card printing and lamination system exclusively to 3M for sale as the 3M™ MAXSecure, Secure Card Production System.
The S820i design is a result of Zebra's long-term technical collaboration with 3M for printing identification cards at the point of issuance that require superior tamper-resistance, image security and long-term durability. It incorporates Zebra's newly developed intelligent printing system, which deploys RFID technology for the prevention of fraud and duplication of ID cards by unauthorized personnel.
Designed specifically to utilize 3M™ Secure Card material, the S820i produces up to 90 cards per hour with edge to edge high resolution full-color and either single- or dual-sided lamination that bonds protective layers to the cards through a unique fusing process. It prints on the underside of the 3M laminate material (instead of directly on the plastic card substrate as with conventional plastic card printers), which is then fused to a white card substrate. This process seals the printed images and personalized data inside the card. The layers cannot be separated without obvious damage to the card.
To ensure maximum card security, the 3M™ Secure Card features three levels of image security 1) a visible security image that changes color and intensity when the card is tilted; 2) a bright retro-reflective image visible under focused light; and 3) a hidden security pattern embedded in the card substrate that is visible only under ultra-violet light. Applications for such cards also include national health, social security and voter registration programs, badging for armed forces, law enforcement and government agency personnel, and access and identification for educational institutions, industry and transportation.
In addition to increasing identification card security, the 3M™ Secure Card material provides exceptional card durability as validated through extensive testing and exposure to temperature, humidity, water soaking, washing and drying, exposure to bleach and dry cleaning solvents, coin abrasion, friction, bending and heat tampering.
"We are pleased to continue our relationship with 3M and look forward to supporting high-security card applications such as driver's licenses and other high security identification card applications," emphasized Veraje Anjargolian, VP and General Manager of Zebra's Card Printer Business Unit. "The high security segment of the card printer market demands such increased tamper-proofing and extended card durability."
"Using our Secure Card material, these printers create highly secure identification cards," adds Peter Swain, vice president, 3M Safety & Security Division. "This contract is the result of an ongoing collaboration between our companies to build a reliable, highly secure identification printing solution."
Steven Harrold, business director for the 3M Security Market Center, notes, "The integrity of ID credentials has become even more critical in light of recent world events. Today, more than ever, issuers of key entitlement documents need a secure production platform working seamlessly with advanced card security materials and technologies. 3M's MAXSecure system was conceived with this important principle in mind."
3M will exhibit the MAXSecure Secure Card Production System this week, February 8-11, at the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) Leadership Summit for Identification Security in the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, VA. The Illinois and Quebec driver's license programs are among a number of governmental programs that successfully use Eltron secure ID card printers and 3M™ Secure Card media.
