Zebra Technologies Introduces New, Robust Eltron P720 Plastic Card Printer

Designed for high performance applications with advanced "One Pass" Dual Sided Laminator
CAMARILLO, Calif., November 26, 2001 — Zebra Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq: ZBRA), the worldwide leader in bar code labeling solutions and plastic card printers, today announced the introduction and production of its most advanced full-color plastic card laminating printer, the Eltron P720 Dual Sided Color Card Printer with "One-Pass" Linerless Laminator.

Designed for high-performance applications including driver's licenses, government identification and high-security access control, the P720 delivers long-lasting durable cards using the latest in laminating technology.

"Frequent card use, such as swiping through a bar code or magnetic stripe reader, can damage a card's printed image over time," said Holly Sacks, vice president of marketing for Eltron Card Printer Products. "Adding a laminate patch increases a card's durability up to several years, as well as adding to its security features. The P720 uses large, near edge-to-edge laminate patches to cover more of a card's surface, thus maximizing protection of the printed area. It's also the fastest on-demand dual-sided lamination card printer in its class."

The P720 produces full-color dual-sided laminated plastic cards in as little as 30 seconds per card. The printer laminates both sides of a card simultaneously with a new polyester patch that eliminates the lamination's liner material. This advanced "wasteless" technology provides continuous laminating of up to 800 cards. Dual-sided card lamination considerably increases card life and durability, compared with non-laminated cards, by reducing dye migration, UV fading, and wear from frequent swiping. The extra layer of protection provided by lamination also deters counterfeiting, alteration, and duplication, and can incorporate holographic images to help ensure a card's authenticity.

The P720 is designed to be easy to use, with features such as automatic ribbon and laminate synchronization, automatic cleaning alerts, a laminate detection system, and on-screen alert messaging. It also features patent pending, easy-to-load, dual laminate cassettes, and a patented card-cleaning cartridge that thoroughly removes dust on a card prior to printing and laminating for higher quality output.

The P720 incorporates a field-proven print engine with 300-dpi (dots per inch) print resolution to produce high-quality photographs and other images. It features a rugged all-metal enclosure with a viewing window, cover and door locks, and a handy reject card hopper to collect cards that fail encoding verification prior the lamination process. Magnetic encoding and smart card contact station options are available. A bi-directional printer-driver and both USB and Centronics interfaces are standard using Windows™ Windows 95/98, 2000, ME or NT.

Other applications for the P720 include photo ID cards, employee badges, access control cards, and library cards - virtually any application where longer life plastic cards are a better solution.
