New Eltron Max3300 Secure ID Printing System Produces Plastic Cards With 10-Year Durability and Added Security

Zebra Technologies' Newest Eltron Card Printer Makes use of Advanced 3MΠSecure Card 3-Layer Protective Lamination To Produce Cards With 10-Year Life.
CAMARILLO, Calif., July 28, 1999 — Zebra Technologies Corporation, the worldwide leader in bar code and plastic card output solutions, today announced its new Eltron Max3300 plastic card printing and lamination system.

The Eltron Max3300 is designed for on-demand printing of identification cards that require superior tamper resistant security and ten-year durability. A key feature of the Max3300 is its ability to produce cards with either a single- or dual-sided lamination that bonds protective layers to the cards through a unique fusing process. The new 3-layer lamination configuration is designed to provide added durability as well as additional security.

The system makes use of 3M Secure Card technology that employs printing on the underside of a clear laminate material rather than directly on the plastic card substrate as with conventional card printers. The Secure Card technology involves fusion of the white card substrate with the clear laminate material on which the image is printed. Once fused, the layers cannot be separated.

The dual-laminated cards are kept to the same thickness as standard 30 mil plastic cards by employing a 8 mil laminate material on a 15 mil white substrate stock. Single-sided laminated cards use a slightly thicker 22 mil substrate to achieve their 30 mil thickness.

For even greater security, 3M Secure Card contains three additional features; a visible security image that changes color and intensity when the card is tilted, a bright retro-reflective image visible under focused light, and a hidden security pattern embedded in the card substrate visible only under Ultra Violet (UV) light.

Card durability has been validated through extensive testing including; temperature/ humidity exposure, water soaking, washer/dryer exposure, exposure to bleach and dry cleaning solvents, coin abrasion and friction tests, bending and heat tampering. Cards are warranted for a ten-year life.

Capable of producing high-resolution, full-color, edge-to-edge printing, the Max3300 provides ultra-sharp 300-dpi resolution for precise, readable bar codes, ID photos, graphics and text.

The Max3300 can produce 90 dual- or single-sided, laminated cards per hour. The Max3300 is also available with an optional magnetic stripe encoder for card applications that require magnetically encoded information.

"Research told us that there was a growing segment of the market that wanted to print highly durable personalized cards that would last ten years or more, and be extremely difficult to alter or forge," said Patrice Foliard, vice president of sales and marketing for Zebra's Eltron Card Printer Unit. "By combining our card printer technology in partnership with 3M's Secure Card technology we are able to provide the solution these customers require."

"With the Eltron Max3300 printer we have strengthened our position in the high security segment of the card printer market and are ready to capitalize on the growth in the instant issue of ultra-secure cards both in the U.S. and worldwide," remarked Foliard.

Applications for the Max3300 include driver's licenses, National ID cards, government employee badges, and access control cards - specifically, any application where card durability and security are key requirements.

Pricing/Availability

The Eltron Max3300 Card Printing System begins shipping in August. Price of the basic model is $16,500. The magnetic stripe encoder model lists for $19,935.
